Conservation and Listed Buildings

We are experienced in working with listed buildings having carried out conservation projects in and around Edinburgh over the last 12 years.  ZONE Architects partner David Jamieson is a an accredited conservation architect under the scheme run by the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland. 

Our range of experience goes from straightforward chimney and roof repairs to A and B listed buildings in Edinburgh’s New Town to more significant interventions involving extensions and partial demolition.

In 2013 we are leading a project to restore a section of an A Listed Georgian Terrace in Edinburgh’s Elm Row.

We adopt the internationally recognised definition of conservation as the management of change of our building and built environment.  This means that an individual approach is made for each project and often starts with the preparation of a conservation plan whose purpose is to establish the cultural significance of a building or landscape before any intervention should be made. We adhere to the primary tenets of conservation which are that minimal intervention should be made, there should be minimal loss of authenticity and intervention works should be reversible and be honest or lacking in deceit.

We have experience in working with grant giving bodies such as Edinburgh World Heritage and we have a policy of continuous professional development and learning about traditional construction methods.
