Disused farm steadings can make lovely places to live. This farm on the edge of the village of Greenlaw had fallen into disuse and our client wants to rescue one corner of the Victorian era buildings to make a house surrounding a courtyard garden.
The design approach is to consolidate the stone buildings with sensitive conservation-based repair techniques and extend them in a distinctive and low carbon language of timber frame structures with timber cladding. A industrial detail to the cladding references some of the original doors and windows.
Internally the building will be fully insulated to Enerphit standards with a MVHR system to ensure good air quality. An emphasis on large triple-glazed windows and rooflights will ensure that the interior is bright and airy without being cold or draughty.
Planning consent was granted in the Spring of 2024.
