The Rev W.B. Stevenson's house was built in 1902 to designs by George Washington Browne in an idiosyncratic Queen Anne style.  It sits proudly in two acres of land near Ravelston woods but needed repair and renewed services.  The present owners, who are keen gardeners asked ZONE Architects to repair, modernise, insulate and extend it to provide a much stronger connection to its mature gardens and woodland setting. A garden room extension provides kitchen space, relocated from the gloomy back service wing.  Constructed in a deliberately contemporary style of wood and glass, this new building is designed to contrast with the original stone building.

A design-led decarbonisation programme sensitively introduces insulation, ventilation and heating systems without adversely affecting the fabric of the original house.

ZONE's historical research was used to assist Historic Environment Scotland's statutory listing process in 2021.  Planning consent was granted in the autumn of 2021 and the house was complete in 2024. Extensive garden works including a greenhouse and garden studio were completed in 2025.
