This is a comprehensive upgrading and extending of a townhouse on Edinburgh’s Royal Terrace. The house had been hastily converted from an office in the 1990s and our brief was to both restore the original splendour of the building and provide high quality contemporary services.

The project includes removing a group of untidy and non-original outbuildings and replacing them with a new studio and terrace to the rear. These improve the connection of the house to the garden, as well as providing a fully glazed contemporary studio space. In general the design strategy was to subtly distinguish the new built elements as distinct from the original building. New bathrooms float in the existing Georgian rooms and the new extension has a subtle polished stone finish in contrast to the course sandstone rubble of the existing rear elevation.
