ZONE Architects is an award-winning design studio based in Edinburgh. With a client-centred approach we deliver buildings to the highest standards of design, detail and delivery. All our projects are based on fresh thinking and sensitivity to their location and context, we are great communicators and we always seek to add value to your proposals.
We work across a range of scales from landscape to urbanism to new individual buildings and the imaginative re-use and alterations to existing buildings. We are familiar with the latest building conservation practice having worked with listed buildings of all periods.
We adopt a holistic approach to sustainability and energy management which is a central issue from the beginning of the design process. This means that we design buildings to be energy efficient in a passive manner based on site layout, orientation, construction and insulation methods, and the building products selected.
ZONE Architects is run by directors David Jamieson and Suzanne Ewing.
To get a better idea of what we have done in the past and what we’re working on now, please check out our projects page.
David trained at Edinburgh College of Art and then Kingston University in South London. He qualified as an architect in 1993. Since then he has worked in Bombay, London, and, for the last 15 years, in Edinburgh.
David has extensive experience of many building types and construction technologies. He was Project Architect and Senior Designer for the award-winning Edinburgh Dental Institute whilst working for Lewis and Hickey Architects.
Between 1999 and 2001 he was Senior Designer with Hackland + Dore Architects, and in 2002 he set up ZONE Architects with Suzanne Ewing.
David was a design tutor at the University of Newcastle between 1998 and 2002, and has since been a visiting design critic at the University of Edinburgh.
David is highly knowledgeable about energy use in houses and is registered to self-certify Section 6 of the Scottish Building Standards which deals with the energy use of domestic buildings. He is also an accredited Conservation Architect under the scheme operated by the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland.
Suzanne studied architecture at the University of Cambridge and qualified in 1995. Since then she has worked in London, Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Suzanne has a wide range of experience including refurbishment, new build and public realm projects. In 2002 she set up ZONE Architects with David Jamieson.
Since 1998 Suzanne has combined her design work with teaching and research. Until 2002 she was a lecturer in architecture for the University of Newcastle, and currently
Suzanne is Professor of Architectural Criticism at the Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ESALA, University of Edinburgh) and was Head of School from 2016-2019.
Suzanne is on the steering group of the AHRA (Architectural Humanities Research Association) and actively contributes to debates on architecture, education and research.
She has been an invited guest critic, design workshop leader and external examiner at various European schools of architecture.
Hannah joined ZONE Architects in 2020. She graduated from the Mackintosh School of Architecture and completed her Part III professional qualification at the University of Edinburgh in 2019. She has gained experience at a range of different practices in Edinburgh and London, working in both the residential and commercial sectors.
As project architect and certified Passive House Designer, she takes a keen interest in sustainability in the practice, and enjoys the craftmanship and detail involved in design work, working closely with both client and construction team to deliver projects through all work stages.
Emily joined ZONE Architects in the summer of 2024 as a Part II Architectural Assistant. She trained at the Mackintosh School of Architecture and Queens University Belfast.
Emily’s academic portfolio ranges from a landmark staircase situated in Naples underground network that encouraged the exploration of the unknown, to a community-led project that focused on the adaptive reuse of derelict buildings. Leading on from this project, she was appointed Lead Research Assistant for an investigation into community-led design as part of wider innovative with Belfast City Council to reimagine the streets of Belfast.
