This is a 1970s Bett Homes catalogue house on an exceptional site just off St Andrews’ South Street. We were challenged with transforming the house to make it more worthy of its site and sorting out the confused interior.
The interior layout is being completely rearranged to make the most of the relationship with its garden and the wider views beyond. In particular a new dormer window is focused on Gregory’s pillar at Scooniehill to the south. This pillar marks one end of the meridian which St Andrews University’s first professor of mathematics James Gregory famously established in the 1670s.
The house is also being made more energy efficient largely through the introduction of large amounts of insulation to the external wall, floor and roof construction. We will also install solar photo voltaic and thermal panels on the roof.
The house significantly exceeds the requirements of the current Scottish Building Standards and is an exemplar of how this period of building can be sensitively brought up to date.
Winner of the Dundee Architectural Association Small Project Award 2013.
