This indoor pool is located within the semi-basement of a house in west Edinburgh. It is used every day for exercise and fitness and was designed to sit unobtrusively in the lowest floor of a three-storey new villa design by Zone in 2012. As the house sits on a sloping plot, the north end of the pool has conventional windows, screened for privacy. At the south end the pool building lies below garden level and sunlight is brought deep into the pool room with a large slot of glazing which can be walked over above.
Complex structural engineering, along with ventilation and plumbing was coordinated by Zone with a discrete plant and storage room located at one end of the pool. An electric pool cover retains heat in the water when not in use. Robust finishes including tile and a stretch ceiling have minimised any maintenance requirements.
