Self-build in The Grange – Twin Peaks

Zone obtained planning and listed building consent in 2018 for this extension to a ground floor flat which is part of a B-Listed terrace on Strathearn Place in Edinburgh. They successfully challenged the Council’s 50% rule for rear extension coverage by introducing a courtyard which brings light into rear bedrooms. The additional two bedrooms that are provided with this proposal have allowed the family to continue living in the Grange which has a shortage of affordable family housing.

The twin gable of the design echo the pattern of traditional Victorian outshots along this terrace but in a contemporary way.  One gable comprises a family garden room, the other has two kids bedrooms.

As well as gaining planning consent and a building warrant, Zone are supporting the owners’ impressive self-build journey in which much love is being invested in the details of a finely crafted extension.
